Introducing De La Nada
Announcing a new storytelling project by La Cuenta co-Founder, Alix Dick.
Growing up, I never found a leader that shared similar social justice values and looked like me. I never found a connection as a young person with someone that reflected my capabilities as a woman. Today, I am in awe of so many of the women around me, who have taught me more than any politician or celebrity ever could.
We often minimize the change that the people around us bring to the world. However, I have met women who continue to inspire me to follow the path that I am on now. These are women who have changed my life by allowing me to witness who they are fully and boldly.
This is why I am launching De La Nada.
Each installment of De La Nada offers a portrait of a woman who is changing her community from within.
I started De La Nada because, as a woman with an unapologetic voice, I want the world to recognize the women that make this world go round. I want to honor those of us who are often unseen but are transforming: we’re transforming business; we’re transforming families, we’re transforming civic engagement. We’ve often had to build our work from nothing. When there was not a space for us at society’s table, we made our own tables and changed the world anyway.
Even when I was growing up in Mexico, I never felt like I had strong leaders to look up to. This feeling only worsened when I came to the United States. The simple fact that this system has been created in order to ensure I fail–that’s been the driving force that led me to create something from the ground up. Immigrant women are bringing more value to society than we are given credit for. De La Nada is a project focused on honoring those world changers. It is a space to network, to support, and to unite. The women of De La Nada have innovated in ways that better all of us. It’s time for the world to recognize them:
she is the nurse,
she is the teacher,
she is the lawyer,
she is the therapist,
she is the entrepreneur,
she is the writer,
she is the mom,
she is the business owner,
she is the dreamer,
She is me.
