BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT: The Cost of Being Undocumented
The book that launched La Cuenta arrives in bookstores everywhere in June 2025
We are thrilled to announce:
The Cost of Being Undocumented: One Woman’s Reckoning with America’s Inhumane Math by Alix Dick and Antero Garcia arrives June 2025 from Beacon Press.
Years in the making, we wrote this book to unpack the invisible costs of undocumented life in the United States. Combining personal memoir with the tools of social science research, The Cost of Being Undocumented is a book that turns the conversation about immigration policy on its head.
Building off of the mixture of empirical research with vivid storytelling, we launched La Cuenta as an attempt at expanding the voices shaping conversations about immigration.
An inhumane math pervades this country: even as our government extracts labor and often taxes from undocumented workers, it excludes these same workers from its social safety net and from participating in society at large. Politicians love to talk about undocumented people, but what is actually truthful about their words? Our stories, our finances, our safety, our labor–these are absent in today’s public conversations.
We are excited to share more details about this book in the coming weeks. For anyone who has ever felt forgotten, misunderstood, or unheard: this book is for you.
