About the Book
“This book demands to be read. Alix divulges things you’re not supposed
to say but that should be said. . . . This book is profound, and it feels like a gut
punch (in the best way possible) page after page.”
If you haven’t heard about The Cost of Being Undocumented, it’s the book that helped launch La Cuenta. Written by co-founders Alix Dick and Antero Garcia, it tallies the numerous, often invisible costs of undocumented life, serving as a powerful indictment of structural oppression in America.
Told from Alix's perspective, each chapter focuses on a different cost of undocumented living—the cost of health, the cost of love, the cost of dreaming—while chronicling her story fleeing cartel violence in Sinaloa, Mexico and creating a life in the United States. Many of the scenes that we share are difficult and unforgettable: escaping from a relationship in which a partner threatened to report Alix to immigration; getting root canals done in an underground dental clinic.
This book is personal. It’s political. It’s necessary.
This is a genuinely terrifying time to share this book and we are hoping you will help us support this work. Thank you for helping to bring The Cost of Being Undocumented into the world.
