This week we are featuring a comic created by the amazing folks at the Asian Law Caucus, the U.S.’s first Asian American legal and civil rights organization:
Broken Stems, is a story about how California prisons tear apart families by voluntarily colluding with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Asian Law Caucus and illustrator Laura Gao are telling this story through the voice of Vyseth, a California immigrant who grew up with his family in Long Beach, not unlike so many of our clients.
As background on this project, the ALC write:
It’s one thing to read legal briefs, and it’s another thing to read comics. As a legal and civil rights organization, we’re pushing ourselves to bring to life what is often buried in filings and dense reports. We aim to translate the knowledge we’re gaining as we litigate into resources that are accessible to people who are trying to understand the systems that shape their lives.

In 2023, we filed a major case against the CA state prisons systems alongside ACLU of Northern California, Asian Prisoner Support Committee, Root & Rebound and individual plaintiffs Choy Pangthong and Roth Chan. The lawsuit charged that California prisons are voluntarily colluding with ICE to push people towards deportation. Clients and community members have for years shared how prison staff discriminated against them because of their perceived foreignness and then referred to ICE. Then, we got new documents and emails from a public records request that helped us piece together a more detailed understanding of prison operations and file this lawsuit.
Which brings us to Broken Stems, a new comic from ALC that tells this story of collusion between the CA prison and ICE through the fictional character Vyseth. We worked with illustrator Laura Gao and colorist Monica Nguyen-Vo to depict what is happening within prison walls. It’s inspired by the stories of so many ALC clients and community members who are fighting to reunite with their loved ones.
